Take a Training Course
In order to become a seaman, you need to take a basic seaman training or BST. First, you need to have the STCW 95 that will allow you as a seafarer entry level to board on boat, yacht and ship.
To have an STCW 95 certificate, you need to pass and complete the 7-day training course that includes the following: Sea Survival Techniques, Safety or First Aid, Personal safety and social Responsibilities and Fire Fighting and Prevention.
You need to enroll in the maritime schools in the Philippines or colleges that offer training courses. Make sure the school is accredited and approved by Maritime Training Council.
Seaman Requirements
To be able to work and employ in a shipping company, you need the following requirements:
If you don’t have a Seaman Book, you need to get one, it is important like Passport. This will be your ticket to work abroad or overseas. Also, it is one of the requirements when applying for a visa.
Once all the requirements are settled, find a shipping company where you will work. Once you get hired, register at POEA to officially become a registered Filipino seaman. You will get an SRC that will issue by the POEA if you complete all the requirements such as the employment contract and the 3 given above. This SRC is another requirement to embark. Your employer will help you get this certification.

If you want to get a higher position or rank, you need to take a full degree of maritime course, like BSMT (Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation) and BSMarE (Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering). This will help you to get the maritime career you really want.
